Retinol Myths & Truths – How to Introduce It Without Irritation
Retinol is one of the most talked-about skincare ingredients — and for good reason! As an acne expert, it is not my first choice for treating acne, BUT, if you’re struggling with dull lackluster skin, it could be an amazing addition into your routine! It improves texture, brightens tone, supports collagen, and keeps pores clear. But with all the hype comes confusion, fear, and a lot of myths. Let’s break it down simply so you can feel confident using it the right way.
Myth #1: Retinol thins your skin
Truth: Retinol actually thickens the deeper layers of your skin by boosting collagen production.
It can make the top layer feel thinner temporarily because it speeds up cell turnover, but the overall result is stronger, healthier skin.
Myth #2: Retinol is ONLY for anti-aging
Truth: Retinol is for anyone dealing with clogged pores, texture, pigmentation, or dullness.
It benefits:
-
sun damage
-
fine lines
-
uneven tone
-
rough texture
It’s not just an “over 40” ingredient. It’s a performance ingredient for many skin goals! We recommend you start using a retinol in your mid 20s if your skin concerns permit the use.
Myth #3: You can’t use retinol with sensitive skin
Truth: You can — it just needs a slow, thoughtful introduction + gentle formulation. Our favorite is the retinal B3 serum from Face Reality Skincare.
Myth #4: Purging = it must not be not working
Truth: Purging is normal and temporary.
Retinol speeds up cell turnover, which can bring deep congestion to the surface faster. This usually settles within 2-3 weeks.
Myth #5: More must be better
Truth: Using a higher strength doesn’t mean faster results. In fact, we recommend using a percentage that your skin can tolerate so you can acclimate your way to using it more often - rather than using a super strong percentage that you can only wear 1x a week.
A gentle, consistent approach = better long-term outcomes and less irritation.
How to Introduce Retinol Without Irritation
Retinol success comes down to timing, technique, and consistency. Here’s the Poppin Skin Spa–approved method:
Start slow
Use it 2–3 nights per week at first. Once your skin adjusts, you can increase frequency as tolerated.
Sandwich method
On nights you apply retinol:
-
Moisturizer
-
Apply retinol
-
Moisturizer again
This creates a buffer, reducing dryness, flakiness, and redness.
Hydration is your bestest friend
Pair retinol with:
-
a hydrating serum or hydrator or a nourishing moisturizer
The healthier your skin barrier, the better your results.
Avoid combining with other stronger products at first
Be careful with:
-
Other exfoliants
-
AHAs/BHAs
-
benzoyl peroxide
-
vitamin C (depending on formula)
You can still use them if your provider gives you the green light — just not all on the same night when you’re starting.
Use a pea-sized amount
More than that doesn’t speed results — it only increases irritation.
Be patient
Retinol is a long game. Real improvements usually show around 8–12 weeks, with even more progress over months!
When to Pause or Adjust
Take a break if you notice:
-
intense stinging
-
burning
-
cracked skin
-
severe peeling
Your skin might need a gentler formula or slower schedule.
The Bottom Line
Retinol does work, and greatly at that —when introduced correctly. Go slow, stay consistent, and support your skin barrier along the way.
