Exfoliation 101: Chemical vs. Physical Exfoliants (and How to Avoid Over-Exfoliating)
Exfoliation is one of the best ways to keep your skin smooth, glowing, and healthy. But with so many types of exfoliants out there — and the risk of overdoing it — it’s easy to feel confused about what’s right for you. Let’s break it down!
What is Exfoliation?
Exfoliation is the process of removing dead skin cells from the surface of your skin. This helps improve texture, brighten dullness, and allows your skincare products to absorb more effectively.
There are two main types of exfoliation:
Physical Exfoliants 🧽
These are products that use small particles or tools to physically slough off dead skin cells. Best used on non inflamed acne. We love the antioxidant scrub from Face Reality Skincare.
-
Examples: facial scrubs, cleansing brushes, exfoliating pads.
-
Pros: Instant smooth feeling, easy to use.
-
Cons: Can be too abrasive if overused or if the particles are rough, which may lead to irritation or micro-tears in the skin.
Chemical Exfoliants 🧪
These use active ingredients to gently dissolve the bonds holding dead skin cells together. Best used on inflamed acne or hyperpigmentation. Our favorite chemical exfoliant is our L Mandelic Serum from Face Reality Skincare.
-
Common ingredients: AHAs (like glycolic or lactic acid), BHAs (like salicylic acid), and enzymes.
-
Pros: More even exfoliation, effective for acne, discoloration, and texture.
-
Cons: Can cause sensitivity if not used correctly, and may not be suitable for every skin type without guidance.
How to Avoid Over-Exfoliating 🚫
Exfoliation is amazing — but too much of a good thing can backfire. Signs of over-exfoliation include redness, dryness, increased breakouts, or stinging when applying products. If you suspect a damaged skin barrier, please contact one of our skincare professionals for further guidance on how to properly heal your skin.
Tips to exfoliate safely:
-
Start 1–2 times per week (your esthetician can help tailor the right schedule).
-
Don’t combine too many exfoliating products at once (like scrubs + acids).
-
Always follow with a nourishing moisturizer and SPF.
-
Listen to your skin — if it feels tight, raw, or extra sensitive, it’s time for a break. We recommend 2-3 days, sometimes even a week, with NO exfoliation.
Bottom Line ✨
Both chemical and physical exfoliants can play a role in your skincare routine, but balance is key. Using the right exfoliant in the right way keeps your skin fresh, radiant, and protected.
